The Reason We Are Shriners

Last night while I was at the Shrine helping to set up for a non-Shrine event and working through the exciting mail the Potentate gets every day (mainly bill's), I received a call from someone who was just calling with some good news. It seems as though many years back there was a family in the Sidney area who had a young child who was born with a hole in their back and very serious medical complications. The doctors told the family the newborn could be saved but the best they could do was to do an emergency medical procedure but the newborn would probably never be able to learn or function normally. Someone who was at the hospital that day said let us contact Shriners and see what they could do which they did and the results were unbelievable. The young child is now fully grown and able to function normally. She has now said they only thing she wants to do is to meet those who not only saved her life but also made it possible for her to have a normal life. I'm working right now to make her request come true by inviting her to meet the Shriners at the April stated meeting. Stories like this are why I belong to Antioch Shrine and decided to accept the challenge to be Potentate this year.

Just So You Know

A few years back Imperial developed some training sessions where some of the Divan members of the same station got together and met to discuss "best in class ideas" and gain training on how to better perform their jobs. While we haven't been able to participate as actively as we might have liked in these programs over the past couple of years due to uncertainty with the finances at Antioch, this year we budgeted to send those who would benefit from this training to attend training sessions. Most of this training takes place from around the end of February to the end of March. So why do I bring this up? Just to let you know that several of the officers might not be seen for a couple of weeks and reason may just be because they are taking time out of their lives to help make sure Antioch is running as efficiently as possible and they are hearing new potential ideas to help make your experience as a Shriner even better. And as a sideline, someone form Imperial must have already heard about what we are trying to do with membership since they are asking us to tell about our membership program at the various training sessions. CONGRATULATIONS!....and pat yourselves on the back for helping to get Antioch noticed at an Imperial level.

Divan Meeting/Alpha Lodge Insp

Today we met at Cold Beer and Cheeseburgers in Kettering for our Divan meeting so the Divan could attend the Alpha Lodge Inspection which is the home Lodge of our Recorder, Jerry Jamieson. Antioch had a great showing as almost all of the Divan was able to attend and it was noted as we all came dressed alike in our Divan outfit. As a special surprise, the candidate for the evening was the son of Antioch Shrine member, Randy Webner. Alpha Lodge also has MANY of its own members who are active at Antioch Shrine. I heard several positive comments about Antioch supporting the Lodges this year which I am always excited to hear since this is where we need to go to get our new members. We are trying hard to have the Divan represented at all the home Lodges which our Divan members belong.

Follow/Catch Up Day

Last week was definitely not one, from a health perspective, that I would like to continue. I probably slept more last week trying to shake whatever was holding on than I have in all the past month combined. And with Jerry being at the Recorder's conference this past week, we had lots of bills to catch up on, letters to sign, and extra pins to distribute to various Divan members. It was also a good day to work on planning future events o happen later in the year and getting ready for upcoming events in the near future.
It also was my daughter's 16th Birthday, so I should give fair warning that she is looking to get her license soon and the roads won't be the same again.

York Rite Festival

I was at the York Rite festival several times this week as a few new candidates became members of the York Rite. While I normally would have seen this as an opportunity to get a couple of new shrine petitions, I decided to leave that to Tom Best from the Antioch Shrine membership team would was himself joining the York Rite this week. I did, however, talk with several of our members who were busy doing parts in the York Rite this week and all indicated they are looking towards attending events at Antioch again soon as they heard about the good times we were having and didn't want to miss out.

You Can Run But You Can't Hide- the BIG 50

Sometimes it is better to just go with the flow ... Friday evening was just like any other night except that for me it was an another birthday and just happened to be number 50. But how bad can it be, as my soon to be 16 year old was planning the party?

Well.......she insisted on driving to the location and just before we got there I was blindfolded. Since it was to be a daddy/ daughter day I said to myself how bad could it be.... I would soon find out. Not only was she there but all the Divan and their ladies were also present. They welcomed me to the over the hill gang with appropriate items and yes .... I'm now a member of AARP thanks to them.

Funsters Meeting and Short Form Initiation

Well it ended up really being a good night in Huntsville this evening for Antioch. We now have five new members including four who joined the Funsters Unit. It seems as if there may be a friendly competition brewing between the Funsters and the Middletown Shrine Club. When I told the Funsters, Middletown was trying to set up a short form for seven new members for Antioch, they quickly asked for more petitions, We are, however, slightly concerned that we might need a new Oriental Guide as Dave Heizer was getting a little too confident in his comments and might have offended some of the Funsters.

Never fear the Funsters are not immediate on their "paybacks" for talking trash against the Funsters.....they like to strike when someone least expects it. Guess I should stay clear of Dave Heizer for a while....or maybe he and Snoopy should take the new Funsters rig up to them when it is finished. (If that happens, I’ll make sure the Photo Unit is closely following as there might be some good photo opportunities).

Parades

The Antioch Parade schedule is already set but we are getting several requests (especially over the past couple of weeks) to participate in various parades. I plan to distribute any information to the Unit Directors/Clubs Association President and the Parade Marshall. If you are interested in participating, while they will not be Potes Call, I would be inclined to approve participation but again you must request it from the Potentate prior to participating. (As an FYI...we are not going to Celina this year as it is the same weekend/time as the Greenville Potes Call. If the conflict continues, we may consider alternating years since Greenville is a big supporter for the Hospitals and Celina definitely has a huge turnout for their parade....but then that will be up to the 2013 Potentate!)

Another Busy Evening at Antioch

This past evening was a busy night at Antioch. The Classic Cars were meeting in the Dining Room for their Installation, the Brass Band was practicing in the basement and the Greeters were meeting upstairs. I stopped by to see if any of the groups needed anything but when I got there the rest of the Divan had everything covered. With everything in good hands, I headed over to the Dayton Masonic Center to attend the York Rite Week Chapter Inspection where several of our active Antioch Shrine members were officers and had invited me over to attend their Inspection. The guest Inspector was from Chardon, Ohio were just a day ago a tragic High School shooting, which left three young students dead and two in critical condition, occurred less than 2 miles from his home in the same school district where his wife was a teacher. His discussion of the events really made me realize how thankful we should be for every day.

Ambassadors Meeting

Today the Ambassadors met and we discussed the upcoming events and what we might do to help those Clubs needing a little assistance.Luckily most seem to be moving in the right direction or making changes to hopefully get them headed in the right direction. Down And Out

I was all prepared to take the dance floor this evening by storm but my body didn't like the idea and I was on the disabled list today. I was disappointed to have to miss the Dancing With The Shriner's tonight at Antioch as I made Pam practice on this past Saturday at the Evening in Paris Dinner/Dance (or maybe she made me practice). One good thing today, I think I caught up for all the sleep I've missed recently as the medicine I took today knocked me out for several hours. I was, however, able to follow up on a few items today and if anyone has any candidates in the northern part of the Antioch area, we will be in Huntsville at the Funsters building on Thursday March 1st to put on the short form for at least 5-7 new candidates from around the Huntsville area. Feel free to bring any new candidates with their petitions and money that evening (and if you let the office know we will try to have a fez there for them as well).

Evening in Paris

It isn't often that things turn out actually as you had planned but this evening sure came close to turning out exactly as I planned. And as I've always said, and it is especially true when you are trying to go a little over the top, no one can do it alone and in order to make a great event it requires lots of folks all working in the same direction. Tonight really seemed as if everyone was working in concert. The evening started with a nice social hour upstairs with nearly 100 people in attendance. They were then dismissed to go downstairs and when they entered the dining area, each lady was greeted with a beautiful red rose from the Potentate. And after a great meal, everyone moved back to the ballroom for the band and dance. The room was elegantly decorated and outside in the entry way was a nice French bistro set up and an art gallery. The Photo Unit also had a nice studio set up to take formal photos for the evening as it was a good opportunity to get them with everyone nicely dressed up for the evening. The Divan members and their Ladies welcomed the guests with a gift for each one as they entered the ballroom. The band started playing and those in attendance quickly filled the dance floor. A little later the Divan filled the ballroom once again and this time with one last surprise, wine for all in attendance. The evening, in my opinion, turned out to be a great success and I heard many great comments from those in attendance. Now it is time to start getting ready for the next major event ….Irish Night….which is set to be a big event with lots of activity, Irish Dancers, and possibly even some green beer…and who know maybe even some dancing on the bar afterwards by some Irish Dancer want-a-bees (but don’t worry it won’t be me dancing!).

Candidate Preparation Meeting

Tonight, we met at Antioch to prepare twelve Shrine members for a new journey they will be taking in a few months. It was a fun evening as there were lots of jokes and fellowship. We explained what they should expect and then had some more fellowship and departed.

I did go upstairs to view the set up for the Evening in Paris event tomorrow evening. The Aides did a nice job of setting the room up and preparing tomorrow for a great event. One thing any presiding officer quickly needs to understand is that in any organization you need to have a good team of helpers to be successful. I'm glad at Antioch that team of good helpers seems to be expanding.

2/21 Divan Meeting and Kentucky Colonels/Photographers

Another busy night around Antioch last night....After meeting last night to discuss important Antioch business during the Divan meeting, I stopped by to meet with both the Kentucky Colonels and the Photographers Unit. At the Photographers Unit, I also installed their new officers.

New Photo Unit Officers

I continued to hear exciting things for Antioch as in each of the meetings there seemed to be a new spark of enthusiasm about getting new members into Antioch and reinstating members who had dropped. While in general I'm not a fan of short form ceremonials (I like to make sure we give a new member the whole treatment when coming into Antioch so we ensure they feel welcome), we did decide to travel to any club or units location to perform a short form if they have 5 or more who want to join Antioch before a full ceremonial. With that being said we have two locations where we might be traveling to perform a short form ceremonial as we have two locations which have each indicated they may have up to 7 new candidates to bring into Antioch. We also went over the information for the memorial service for Chuck Stuck this upcoming Saturday who recently passed away and had been a long time member of the Photographers Unit. According to Frank Klugh when he spoke about Chuck, he indicated Chuck joined the Photo Unit way back close to the start of the club around 40 years ago.

Cabiri and Unit Directors/Club Association

Tonight started off with a visit to the Cabiri meeting. The Cabiri is a group made up of Past Potentates. It is different than any unit or club in that it is chartered at a National level and the locals request to be part of the National. In the meeting, the sad news of the passing today of Marcia Walls was announced. She was the wife of 1992 Potentate Gene Walls. We also talked about what was happening at Antioch and what the Past Potentates could do to support Antioch and the Divan.

After this meeting was the Antioch Unit Directors/Club Association meeting where the new officers were installed with Mick Lile installed as President. I was especially excited this evening with the challenge thrown down by Middletown Shrine club for all clubs and units to exceed their 2012 membership goals. Middletown is working right now on 7 petitions and may soon be requesting a short form ceremonial so they can get the members in and get them working in Middletown Shrine club. They also announced they were pledging to use club funds to help promote the membership efforts this year. If you couldn't be excited to be a Shriner and motivated to help Antioch be the best Shrine in Shrinedom after hearing their President Jeff Chandler speak this evening, you were either asleep or not in attendance.

I also received a neat call this evening from a new petitioner. He is the one I mentioned which came down last Friday for a couple of minutes to turn in his petition. It seems as though instead of staying 5 minutes, he stayed all evening Friday and went home and told his wife about the the upcoming "Evening in Paris" event this coming Saturday. He was calling me to get two tickets to the event this coming Saturday. Nobles...I think we are doing something right! And if you need tickets for the Evening in Paris event, please let me know by Wednesday evening as I will call in with the final numbers on Thursday.

Scottish Rite

Today was not only a great day for Scottish Rite in Dayton, as they had almost 900 in attendance, but it also turned out to be a good day for Antioch. During my discussions today with several former members of Antioch, I had three who indicated they planned to call down this next week and reinstate. Just as exciting was in talking with some folks who were never members of Antioch, three indicated they were going to be signing up to join Antioch in the spring ceremonial class April 28th. While it is a long year, I'm excited to continue to hear from nobles, former nobles, and potential new nobles that they are interested in getting involved with Antioch.

Friday Night Bites - SOLD OUT .... but never fear we'll get more

What a great feeling ... we made the February Friday Night Bites a Hockey themed night to promote the sales of Dayton Gems Game tickets (Game to be held March 18th at 4 PM cost $14) and we sold out of the initial tickets we purchased tonight for the Dayton Gems Game so we are headed back to get more tickets. What a turnout this evening...enough that we outgrew the Oasis and had to move to the dining room. Several folks come out dressed for the occasion and I only had to throw one in the penalty box this evening as they thought the hockey sticks were clubs to use on the men (but never fear as they were only plastic blow up sticks). We also had the great pleasure of having a person stop by and join us who was there to sign a petition to join the Shrine. He was part of the targeted mailing which we sent out earlier this week.

The Hillbilly's proved to be great hosts and several of us even joined in the fun of becoming a member of the Hillbilly's this evening (and yes...Dave and Linda Heizer along with Pam and myself, were also among the invitees). It is just good thing it was not a full moon tonight since I heard they can't do degree work except under certain lunar conditions....(any Hillbilly would know what I'm talking about).

Minerva Lodge Inspection

I decided that it would be nice to have the Divan try to attend the home Lodge Inspection of our Divan members this year. Tonight several of the Divan members went to the Inspection of Minerva Lodge prepared to share information about the Shine with anyone who would be interested. This is my home Lodge and I think the Worshipful Master here proves something we all should remember, it is never too late to ask. When he came down to get his 50 year pin around 6 years ago he indicated the only thing he regretted was that he had not been able to be active in the Lodge. He also vowed that evening to start coming back. And come back he did and a few months later when an officer dropped out he asked if he might be considered to fill the vacancy. The rest is history. He has progressed through the line missing almost nothing. He has put his best foot forward and did a decent job on the ritual especially considering his age as he did his first ritual work ever after turning 70. This should serve as an inspiration to all... it is never too late.

Meeting on Membership

The good part of early morning meetings is they usually involve food. The bad part is after the meetings, I have to go back to do my real job.

Well we have decided to do a targeted mailing to invite some potential new members to join Antioch. With a targeted mailing, we will be following up with those we send the notices to and see if they are interested in more information about the Shrine. With the reinstatement's starting to really move along nicely and John Bull focusing on getting the Legacy Program rolling, general new member additions is our main focus right now but we need your help. There will be several Divan Members at the Scottish Rite mid-winter program Saturday where they will be offering information about the Shrine to all who ask for it. Right now I've heard they have around 850 reservations for lunch so there should be a good crowd.

Busy Night At Antioch

Tonight, we started out at the Temple by bringing in a new member, Tom Fuller, who is affiliated with the Government/Military and wanted to join prior to leaving the area for a while. I also heard the good news from our restoration committee that as soon as they officially come in, we will have at least a dozen reinstatement's already for Antioch this year.

We also attended the Motor Corps meeting and Kevin installed the officers this evening as well.

As the temperatures drop, the heat keeps rising at Antioch as we continue in our quest to meet our membership goals, provide quality events, and ensure Antioch Shrine is continuing to move forward.

Dance Classes at Antioch Shrine

If you have time on the second fourth Monday's between now and the Potentates Ball May 12th, I would suggest for you to consider coming down to Antioch Shrine and joining us for dance classes. The Middlestead's are excellent teachers and best of all they have the patience's of Job as tonight they had to deal with trying to teach me to dance. While there are many things I believe I do well, dancing is not one of them. If they had a show similar to the TV Food Networks show "America's Worst Cooks" and just changed it to "America's Worst Dancers" you would be seeing me on TV right now.

But surprisingly, I survived the night, the Middlestead's did not jump off the roof after trying to teach me how to dance, and Kevin even complimented me by saying "It looks like they have taught you all you will ever be able to learn about dancing!" (and I'm sure he meant it as a compliment).

We will all be back in two weeks and I'm hoping to make it again unless I sprain my ankle during practice over the next couple of weeks (or Pam runs the car over my feet and says "Now you know what it feels like to dance with you")

Met For Lunch Today with the Jesters

Every month the Jesters from Dayton Court #10 meet to swap jokes, lies and eat lunch at Antioch Shrine. I had lunch with the group of which this year their Director is Gary Blackford, who is a Past Potentate of Antioch Shrine. We solved all the world's problems and created a new list longer than the first one of new problems so we tore up the original list to solve the world's problems (along with the second list of new problems) and decided to just stick to having some fellowship and doing what we do best ..... eating!

Remembering What's Important

I usually like to keep these upbeat and light-hearted but today is a little different. I decided to take a little time to do something for a couple of hours today with the whole family. (Though the Divan members usually cringe when I say I took a slight break because it usually means I've taken the time to come up with a bunch of new projects for us to undertake...but not this time.)

I received the sad message the daughter of our new Parade Escort Director, Randy Izor, had passed away at the young age of 31. I called and talked to Randy and it even hit home harder when he indicated that just a couple of weeks back his daughter was fine and she was expecting a new baby. Last week his daughter had some serious complications and they had to do an emergency surgery and deliver the baby (who is doing fine at this time). Unfortunately, Randy's daughter was not as fortunate.

In our everyday fast paced lives, we need to take time to remember each day to be thankful for what we have and live every day as if there is no tomorrow. And always remember ... to let those we love know as often as possible.

Quetzalcoatl Installation

Tonight we installed the officers for the Quetzalcoatl and obligated new members. The food was great and Joe Thorpe did a great job all year of trying to keep the club moving along as the President, though he still can't speak espanol (that's Spanish for you northern guys). He handed over the leadership role to Brian Kennedy. The new water boy is Scott Lipps and he took the job despite being told the water boy had to serve drinks to everyone else but wasn't allowed to drink himself.

Possible Announcement Coming Soon

Today I decided to take the night off...well not really...I just took the night off to address several background related issues (paperwork, follow up, etc.) which needed to be addressed for the Shrine. One of those items involved something which I hope will materialize and I will be able to announce real soon slated to occur on March 11th. So tentatively, mark March 11th on your calendar as a possible Antioch activity. Let's just say if it materializes, Antioch could get an opportunity to work with Dayton to do a major promotional effort which has the possibility to bring some long term economic and national attention to Dayton for years to come.

Aug-Mer Installation

Tonight ended up being a nice evening, for despite the day starting out with snow and slick roads up around St. Mary's where we were headed, the roads were clear tonight (and I don't think the roads were clear just because Dave Heizer was driving!) Dave, Kevin and I (along with Val and Linda) went to the Aug-Mer Club meeting this evening and installed the new officers. The club also voted this evening to try some new ideas to help generate some additional participation from their members.

Afterwards, they had a nice program presented by one of their members, Zane McElroy (Past President), who is in charge of a Robotics Club at the school where here teaches. He told us about the club and gave us a demo of the Robot the students created to participate in local competitions. I was really refreshing to hear the passion in which he spoke about the program knowing that the club utilizes many of the skills the students learn during their every day school related projects.

Divan Meeting Night 2/7

We covered a ton of ground during the meeting but the overall focus for the first half, as we heard from both the Building Maintenance side and the Foundation side tonight, was what can we do to make the building more usable for our members and more attractive to rent to the public. Long term planning is quickly becoming the key for all the Divan members as we try to put together a strategy to move us where we want to be in the future.

And speaking of the future, we spent some time this evening discussing the life blood of Antioch, Membership. We talked about multiple angles which we are going to use to work to meet our goals this year but the key to all plans will be the follow up. Talk is cheap and now is the time for action. I'm also excited to be seeing notes from the various clubs reminding them of the special membership reinstatement and new member fees for 2012.

The last item I am going to mentioned which we discussed was communications. We have to make sure as many members as possible hear the message and actively participate in the programs to be a success. We are introducing some new communication tools for our Directors and Ambassadors to use which will hopefully allow the Divan members present at meetings more of an opportunity to bring new ideas to the membership and answer questions.

Building Corp Meeting

I've been happy over the past year where we have made some significant progress in putting together an improvements list at Antioch and then the Building Corp has gone out and "made it happen". We discussed today taking the next steps in that process of expanding the list and working together to create a long term improvements list. We also discussed soliciting our members to create a database of persons with special skills which might be helpful to the long term up keep of Antioch. Keep watching the Crier as we are going to start increasing the communications with our membership in this area to let you know what is happening.

Circus Day Final Show

Another good day at the circus, at least for most folks but there was one poor guy who everyone seemed to be ganging up on.... Hmmm..I wonder who that woman was getting him with the pie?????? And while I heard the Divan had nothing to do with it, I'm wondering who was dressed up in the yellow and black Divan shirts....maybe a group from the Pittsburgh Steelers who were passing through (but as I told the lady as I was buying numerous black and yellow/gold table items one day at the store.... it is for bees not the Steelers.....)

This also was the first circus for my niece who prior to this weekend always said she was too "scared" to attend the circus. Everyone made her feel comfortable and she said "this was the most fun I ever had". Now that's what I liked to hear.

I wanted to thank Scooby and his friend Jim who spent the weekend as the Bumbles the Bee Mascot for me for this year. The kids in the suites loved it and despite it being VERY WARM in the suit at times....I think Bumbles also enjoyed it.

We also had several DeMolay and some Rainbow join us this year across multiple shows helping out in various manners including running up and down the stairs with various items which needed transported. I thought would include a picture with a few of them. Having been the Executive Officer for Ohio DeMolay for several years it was great to again have a large number assisting us at the Circus

What a great job from everyone making this a success. We changed several thing including the time of year for the circus and holding it when some of our snowbirds might be in Florida but the Nobles and ladies came out in numbers to help fill the needs. Someone today ask me how many it took to put on a circus and as we started counting up all the folks needs for each of the tasks, the totals were well over 100 per show. Considering we had 5 shows that is more than 500 work slots which needed to be filled over the weekend. In addition, we had numerous persons selling ads prior to the circus and many of our faithful Nobles purchasing member coupons. In short it is a monumental effort to make a circus happen and I would especially like to thank Stan Brookins our Circus Chairman and Carol Jamieson who coordinated our Circus Office Staff.

Circus Day Two

Sometimes pictures speak louder than words, so I'll make sure to include a few pictures here. The little boy in the Indy Car ask me to have my picture taken with him as he normally goes to the circus with his grandfather as he was a long time member of Antioch. Unfortunately, his grandfather died the day after he gave him the tickets to attend the circus this year so he asked me to be in the picture with him instead.

I couldn't be prouder of our Nobles this weekend as they have came out to support us in numbers. The best part of the day was the crowds continued to be good....let's hope the final results are equally successful.

Circus Day One

The weather treated us well and the crowd for the evening was a nice start for the weekend. We tried some new ideas to make the circus safer, more enjoyable and profitable. The Indy Cars also set up a photo booth. The main problem on Friday evening was for our OG, Dave Heizer as he decided to bait the Fusnters by saying to them "Give me your best shot this weekend".

Dave...you have a little to learn yet....

THE CIRCUS WEEKEND IS FINALLY HERE!

And to start off the day the Funsters went out for a little bowling grandma's teeth, grandpa's teeth, the big split, little split, and being in the gutter where all associated with the kind of bowling these guys were doing. Next they went to the Rotary meeting where things quickly got out of control. (Though come to think of it, I've never seen the Funsters under control) There were lots of Scott Lipps running around and Funsters were everywhere as THEY WERE THE PROGRAM. And to show their gratitude for all Scott set up for them today they gave him a little gift ...wonder what it was???????????????

Fairborn Shrine Club

Scott Lipps, Dave Heizer, and myself (along with my wife Pam) attended the Fairborn Shrine Club tonight. Unfortunately due to health issues of those to be installed not being able to be present, the installation was postponed until next month. We did, however, have a good discussion about the upcoming events, membership and the circus coming up this weekend. It was actually kind of nice not to have some other "event" happening at the meeting so we could just socialize. And Scott Lipps declared the evening to be fez free night but couldn't get away with it and had to pay the fine.....the club said that it was okay for Scott to forget his fez at every meeting as their treasury could use the fine fees!

Well ....after working to get some date conflicts resolved, starting work on creating a financial opportunity on a specific date we already have something planned, moving dates due to a fun problem (more folks participating in a part of an event than expected so we needed to move it to its own date), and trying to get a date set for a new activity we will be doing later in the year; it is probably appropriate that this evening the date for the Provost Installation was changed to March due to some health concerns within the unit. It would have been nice if I would have known that prior to going to the meeting....guess I need to confirm the DATE sometimes!

Mobile Update and Youth Dance

I decided to see if I could use the mobile ability to update the BLOG today. This might be a work in progress (or disaster in the making!) but it is appropriate when talking about activities involving the youth.

Today was a busy day getting many things done in the background for the Shrine. Reports, follow-up, starting new projects, working on projects for later in the year (good thing I woke up really early this morning to work on things before I had to do my real paying job .... I like it and it pays the bills so I can continue to play as I want). I also did some follow up on a new activity which will be held at Antioch Shrine on May 19th. We are planning a Masonic Youth Dance. We have already been working on it for a while with DeMolay, Rainbow and Jobs Daughters but now need to finalize the plans.

Future Planning- 2012 "Gone With The Wind" Pote's Ball

Today, I met with Chuck Gamble to work on planning the 2012 Potentate's Ball which will feature a "Gone With The Wind Theme". We went over all the plans, budget, assignments and created follow up items. I mention this because often when events happen, they appear as though they just magically happen but it could not be further from the truth. I started working with the hotel on planning this activity around a year ago by getting the rooms and a tentative meal along with the date reserved. Chuck Gamble and Jay Johnston are taking the lead on this activity for 2012 and did something really great last year (as they were also the leads for this event last year for Bill Garlow) by putting together a step by step book of the activities, personnel, expenses and income needed to make the activity a success. We were able to use this information as a starting outline for the activities of this year. Bottom line .....there is a LOT of WORK, PLANNING, and FOLLOW-UP for each and every activity we do at Antioch but it is all worth it when it produces an activity with the best possible experience for a Noble and his Lady.

Divan Get Together

Tonight several members of the Divan got together to celebrate a recent Birthday of one of our Divan Ladies (another lady who just turned 21 again!) and just to spend some time getting to know each other a little better. There of course were the few last minute discussions on the Circus coming up this next weekend but in general it was just a night to get together as a group and relax a little before the hectic week of the final Circus prep. It was kind of neat that our server turned out to be a former student of Carol Jamieson's.

WM Recognition Night & LOH Installation

Tonight the Divan members were split between activities as we had the Legion of Honor Installation at Antioch and the Worshipful Master Recognition Night at the Dayton Masonic Center. I delegated the responsibilities to install the LOH and attend the WM Recognition where we saw many members of Antioch (several of which were recognized as serving as WM this year). The Divan members able to attend the WM Recognition were recognized as a group during the event but the best part is we used the opportunity to inform several persons of the opportunity we have this year with the $50.12 for new members and reinstatement's. Again getting the word out will hopefully really help us in the long run so if you are a members of Antioch and know other members who don't attend regularly, let them know about this opportunity. We also saw our Co-Chief Aides, Richard and Marla Wagner, at the event as they were their to hear their granddaughter (and the Grand Master) perform for the evening entertainment.

We also got a chance to find out afterwards during a little socializing that Linda Heizer has a dark secret about a special talent she possesses. But don't ask her as she has been sworn to secrecy about divulging the information. But for those who can't wait to find out a good secret, at Imperial this year we hope she will reveal her secret talent to all attending......a good reason to consider going with us to Charlotte in July!

Memorial Service for Larry Weller

This afternoon, I attended a memorial service for Larry Weller from Waynesville along with our Recorder, Jerry Jamieson (and his wife Carol), and Chaplain, Richard Poore. The crowd was large and parking difficult. Larry was a very dedicated member and with his wife, Ruby, spent countless hours working for the kids. He helped with the hospitals by raising money and trying to see to it that as many kids as possible from Warren County were able to attend the circus each year. He became a Mason way back in 1949 and also serve at Antioch as an Ambassador over the years along with being honored with the 33rd degree by the Scottish Rite for his efforts to Masonry and the community.

He will be missed by many but remembered in the hearts of all who met him.

Middletown Shrine Club Installation

Middletown decided to try something new and hold their Installation of Officers at Antioch Shrine. I personally thought it was a great idea as they were able to significantly reduce their costs and what they had to charge for the event. The only unfortunately thing was illness hit hard and eight couple could not make it due to health related issues. Despite this, those in attendance had a great time. The food was great, the auction financially beneficial and the dance floor was rocking. They also symbolically presented a $15,000 check for the Hospitals.

Darke County Shrine Club Installation

Dave Heizer and I headed up to Darke County Shrine Club with our wives to install the officers of the club tonight. They had one of the largest group of club officers to install which I have ever seen. In addition, the food was great (As it always is at Romers where they meet). Bruce Puff also went and got several pictures last night.

Unfortunately, the weather turned bad (ice) on the way back but I guess that is to be expected when I head up to Greenville for the Darke County Shrine Club. Two times ago when I attended they had a torrential rain storm which come through on the way back home that actually closed part of SR49 and the last time we watched softball sized hail and a tornado chasing us down SR 49 out the back window of the car.

Greeters Installation & Trinity Chapter Royal Arch Inspection

I was able to attend the first part of the Greeters meeting this evening and John Bull was also present (their Divan Rep) who stayed to install the Club. One comment that I heard this evening that I'm hoping all Clubs & Units say often is that when someone new joins we need to make them feel welcome right away and part of the group. The responsibility for the members of any organization to the new member does not end with the candidate turning in his petition and paying his money or with the obligation/degree work but rather continues while they are a member.

While I try to attend many Masonic meetings (and quite frankly, if we as Shriner's don't attend Masonic functions how can we expect to get new members), I won't be mentioning all of them here just when something occurs which is of interest to the Shrine. After the Greeters excused me a little early, I went to attend my Royal Arch Chapter Inspection. I saw several Shriner's at the event. When a couple of folks asked me about the Shrine pin I was wearing, it was my opening to talk about membership in the Shrine. But the real reason this was significant was what happened next. I started to explain to the person about the Shrine and the $50.12 initiation fee. The person next to him, who was a Shriner though not very active, immediately told the guy he should consider joining at that rate as it was as good a deal as he probably would ever get. I also mentioned the $50.12 reinstatement and three suspended Nobles came over and indicated they just might take me up on the offer. The real point here is that we need to make sure the Nobles who don't attend regularly get the word about the $50.12 for new initiates and reinstatements. Once a few current Noble found out about the $50.12 opportunity, they became energized and started telling everyone.

Ambassadors Meeting

It started out looking bad when only myself and two others were in attendance but then they started coming in until all were present except for those excused! We elected new officers and determined club assignments. We also discussed the potential progression of bringing new Ambassadors on-board and getting them involved. In addition, I was really happy to hear a commitment from those present to assist in the role of ticket takers at their assigned shows at the Antioch Shrine Circus. The Potentate also discussed what he wants the Ambassadors to discuss at the club meetings. We are looking for a few good Nobles who want to get more involved to step up to become Ambassadors.

Circus Planning

The days are drawing close until the 2012 Antioch Shrine Circus. Tonight we spent a couple of hours just ensuring the details are all covered. The Committee has again worked very hard this year to improve the bottom line and the enjoyment of those attending the Circus. More Nobles are still needed to help at the Circus so if you can help please let us know.

Afterwards the first in the series of "dancing with the stars" got underway. Even your Potentate plans to attend some of the sessions which are on the second and fourth Monday's though I'm not sure, if you have viewed the OG Roast entertainment video, that even lessons will help him to be able to dance.

Behind The Scenes Work

While it might not be the most glamorous part of any organization, the planning portion is critical to the success of any group. Today, Pam and I meet with all the Aides for around 3 hours to set up leads for the remaining activities throughout the year and finalize the details for the events of the next three months. We also reviewed where improvements could be made from the first couple of events. The best part of the discussion was the enthusiasm of the Aides towards making sure every detail took into account what could be done to maximize the experience for the Nobles and Ladies attending each event.

Things Were Buzzing Around Antioch Today

As the poor weather conditions continued, it didn't dampen the spirit of several in Antioch who gathered together for a meeting this morning. We swapped bad jokes, I think Illustrious Sir Bill Garlow, Past Potentate, won the worst for the day. We made a donation to the Building Corporation and installed new officers.

We then prepared for the Funsters unit and some their wives to "Clown Up" and head out to several of the local Kroger stores where they went out to help promote the Antioch Shrine Circus. I'm not sure exactly what they were going to be doing but they did ask me if I had bail money....just in case they needed it.

Friday Night Bites/Bee Movie

Despite the poor weather conditions, we had around 50 people tonight in attendance at Antioch. I want to thank the 4 Wheelers who put on a great showing of food for the evening (ask Greg Burroughs to bring appetizers and he brings what HE calls appetizers!) We had several stay for the movie, which we decided to start a little early due to the deteriorating weather conditions. I thought the Bee Movie ended up being a good choice as everyone seemed to have a few good laughs during the showing. I was especially appropriate when during the movie they use the line " who else would have a black and yellow uniform outside a bee" and the crowd chimed in with "the Antioch Shrine Divan". I also want to thank Bruce Puff who is providing me with several great pictures of the various events here in January.

Shrine Past Master's Club Installation

This evening I participated in the Past Masters Club Installation. I was President of the club way back in 2003. Delmar Gainey is the new President. The remaining officers are Chuck Penny 1st VP, Roy Livesay Director, Don Taylor Secretary/Treasurer and Ed Howard Chaplain. Dave Heizer and Richard Poore joined me at the installation while other Divan members headed up to Miami County to install their new officers.

Friday Night Bites and a Movie

Don't forget this Friday, January 20th, is our normal Friday Night Bites but with a twist...at around 7:30 PM we will be showing a movie upstairs. The movie is kid friendly so bring your kids and grand kids to enjoy. The movie will be “The Bee Movie” – (Animated movie 91 Minutes) Starring voices of Jerry Seinfeld, Renée Zellweger and Matthew Broderick. Barry B. Benson, is bee who has just graduated from college, is disillusioned at his lone career choice: making honey. On a special trip outside the hive, Barry's life is saved by Vanessa, a florist in New York City. As their relationship blossoms, he discovers humans actually eat honey, and subsequently decides to sue us.

Light snacks and drinks will be available during the movie.

Divan Meeting Night - 1/17

FYI...We normally meet every 1st and 3rd Tuesday for a Divan Meeting. The meeting was fairly routine (except we finished much quicker.... in around an hour and a half). Why I wanted to make note of the meeting was to give the members a flavor of what is discussed in the meetings. While some discussion is around day to day running of the temple and the execution of Antioch activities, about 80% of the discussion is around what can be done to make being a member of Antioch more enjoyable. I think this is important for the membership to realize as the Divan usually spends 2 (or more) hours every other week as a group on these topics. (And this has been true for at least the past couple of years while I have been on the Divan) I should also note that there are several other clubs/units which are being installed by Divan members other than myself which might not be mentioned in this BLOG. It is not meant to slight them by not mentioning, just that I don't have information to report.

As a member, if you have a suggestion for improvement, let us know. While it might not directly get implemented or you may not notice changes made due to your suggestions, we are listening and are reviewing every activity to see how it could be improved to be more enjoyable for the membership in the future.

Lima Shrine Club Installation

Well I might have some better pictures later (as Bruce Puff was also present and got several pictures) but I want to post the new officers of Lima Shrine Club who I installed into office today. My biggest regret is that I can only attend the Lima Shrine Club meetings by taking a day off work to attend this club as it is a two hour drive each way and after a couple of hours at the meeting, it fairly well takes care of the whole day. I did enjoy talking to them and offered that the Divan members would be willing to come up and speak on the Shrine at any Lodge which wants us to do an education program.

Antioch Meet the Divan and OG Roast

Well there was definitely a little something for everyone during the evening, We started out with formal introductions with the Greeters and Past Masters serving as Honor Guards. Next came a great dinner but the evening was ready to take a little more light hearted twist. After dinner came the unveiling of the Bee (who will be making several appearances during the year) and a little game to see how many times the new Potentate would mention "bees" during his speech. We then went BIG with some entertainment which brought down the house with laughter. After a short video on the Hospital, the Roasting (or should I say Grilling) of the new Oriental Guide was in full swing. We are happy to say, however, that Dave and Linda Heizer survived. Next the progressing Divan members joined our new OG in "Getting All Shook Up" and making the ladies giddy with excitement as Elvis was definitely in the building! The excitement continued as everyone hit the floor to dance the rest of the night away. There was surely plenty to BUZZ about after last night!

Well, we installed new officers for 2012 at Antioch today and are prepared for a HUGE year for new members in Antioch. We have many activities planned and we plan to have lots of FUN during the year. Ed Molen was recognized as an Emeritus Member of Lexington Hospital and Don Motter as Emeritus Hospital Fund Drive Coordinator. Congratulations to Bill and Linda Garlow on a great 2011! We also had the unveiling of the theme and a new stained glass window created by Richard Grimes which contained the theme. Come down and join us in 2012 and find out WHAT'S THE BUZZ ABOUT?

Installation, Meet the Divan and the OG Roast is almost here...only 2 short days left to go. I feel like it is Christmas all over....we had to do some last minute shopping since we have run into the fun problem of more tickets sold for Saturday than was originally planned...over the 250 mark and counting......Making a list & checking it twice...okay enough of that (I sing as well as I dance and I'm glad neither was a prerequisite to the election of Potentate!)

While I won't have set hours which I will be at the temple during the year (as I still work so I can pay for all the playing I do!), I plan to try to make it a point to be at the Temple at least a couple of days a week during the day for a short while. If you have something to talk to me about feel free to email, text or call me as I regularly follow up on my emails, texts, and voicemail.

The Circus is Coming and We Need Your Help

We need all Nobles to consider helping out with the Circus this year as some of our "snow birds" won't be around to assist. Let Don Craycraft or your Unit/Club leadership know if you plan to work. We are in need of ushers and help with some other new positions to assist at all shows. We have again made some changes to the performances and administration; all in an effort to continue to maximize fan enjoyment and Antioch profits. This is the 70th Annual Shrine Circus and our only yearly fun raiser. We need your help to make sure it continues into the future.

Photographer's Dinner

Every year the Photographer's have a dinner where they invite the Divan and we get an opportunity to views all the photos taken during the year. There are thousands of very good pictures which they take each year at the many events held at Antioch including parades. We should all be very thankful that we are able to capture the history of Antioch through their efforts each year.This year our Potentate, Bill Garlow, was given an honorary lifetime membership in the Photo Unit for his many extra hours working with the photo unit and sharing the expertise he gained during his tenure as a Photographer at the Dayton Daily News. Congratulations Bill! Say Cheese.

I've said for a long time, at Antioch we need to be active in the Blue Lodge, York Rite and Scottish Rite through our attendance at activities to get new members. Tonight, I attended Dayton's Blue Lodge Inspection. There was a very large crowd present and I wore my Divan outfit and Bill Garlow's Shrine Potentate pin for 2011. After the meeting, during refreshments, one of the men present ask me about the jacket and pin indicating it was unique from what other members were wearing. This gave me the perfect opportunity to talk about Antioch Shrine. What was interesting was during our discussions, the gentlemen indicated he worked with Bill Garlow at the newspaper. We exchanged information and I asked if he had every considered joining the Shrine. I explained the current offer of $50.12 to join this year and he asked me to email him some information as he might be interested in joining. No hard sell, just being in the right spot and ready to talk about the fun we have at Antioch, that's the key to getting new members.

Antioch Shrine Olympics - SNEAK PEAK

The Summer Olympics will be held in 2012. In that spirit, Antioch Shrine will not be out done.... so in April of 2012, we will be holding our own Antioch Olympics! We will be representing various countries and participating in a few of the more high profile events (though we might alter slightly how the events are performed). We are looking for 5 team captains to hold up their countries honor and create their own Olympic championship team. Keep the evening of April 14th open as we will be hosting this specular event to showcase the "talent" we have at Antioch. News reporters & famous figures (along with a medical crew) will be standing by that day to provide top notch reporting of the event.

This will be a day you don't want to miss as Antioch will be taking the world by storm and if you don't have fun this day, we will have doctors standing by to take your pulse to make sure you are still alive!

Work Day at Antioch

We had a work day down at Antioch today and I want to thank all those who assisted in taking down the decoration from Christmas. We also reviewed all the activities for the next 4 months and things look like they are fairly well finalized. The 2012 Aides are ready to get started on the upcoming activities and I think we have several new and exciting ways we are going to be providing entertainment to cover all interests and age groupings.

Thank goodness for Christmas to New Year's break...no it isn't because it gives us time for a break..it is because it gives us an opportunity to get the finishing touches done on some of the real "behind the scenes" work that is needed. We have been working hard all year to get ready for 2012 and have many great activities planned for 2012. Christmas Parties are Everywhere

Well I think today was finally the final Antioch Christmas Unit/Club Party which I was able to attend. Every one was very cordial to both Pam and myself. During this month we made it to Fairborn, Provost, Classic Cars, Marching Patrol, Pipers, Champaign County, Quetzalcoatl, Golf Club, Middletown, Hillbilly's, Greeters, Past Master's, Four Wheeelers, Legion of Honor, Motor Corps, Cabiri, Rovers, Seniors, Brass Band, Temple Guard, Ambassadors, Funsters, Logan County, Kentucky Colonels and the Gun Club. And we weren't the only ones at many parties as we saw most of the Divan at many parties as well.

Firefighter's Awards 2012 and Chili Cook-off

I decided I wanted to make the 2012 Firefighter's Awards into a big event. Well ....we decided to do a Chili Cook-off in conjunction with it on a Friday Night Bites. Due to an overwhelming outlay of support, we may have to split out the Chili Cook-off and Firefighter's awards into a stand alone event as the interest seems to be growing every day. I will let you know more after the first of the year when we plan to have a meeting on the event.

Funsters/Logan County Christmas Party

Well I was going to "Hold Off" reporting on the Christmas Parties until they were all over...that is until I attended the Funsters. It seems as though they have decided that I needed to get a Funster name and given my usage of technology, I gained the name of "iPod". Now I'm expecting the request for dues will be soon to follow. Thankfully they still have John and Scott to harass and play pranks on so hopefully I can stay a little out of the line of fire.....ok that probably isn't going to work is it?????

Oh and just to let you know...the OG Roast "special entertainment" is really progressing well. John, Kevin and I "tried out" some of the routine....only one problem, Valerie (she is a worker of magic with a sewing machine) has purchased all the white spandex material in the Dayton area.....

Involvement of Members (including Younger Members)

The majority of members who belong to Antioch are not a member of a Unit or Club. We are going to focus in the membership area with getting more persons to join a Unit or a Club. Any ideas are welcomed. In addition, we have several younger members who we need to work to get involved. Their interests in many areas don’t match very well with many of our current activities. I have been enlisting the input of several of these Nobles and there may be a few new activities added during the year to accommodate their interests. There may be activities added for Children’s events at a later date.

Any person selling 10 tickets to an event (with the exception of office tickets and tickets for the Potentates Ball) and turning in the money, will receive 1 free ticket for each 10 sold to that event. Membership Meetings

Well .....Dave Heizer and I now have a weekly standing meeting to determine what can be done to ensure membership is a top priority in the upcoming year. (with a few extra meetings mixed in as needed) We plan on focusing, not only on getting new members, but keeping the existing members. We are hoping for 200 new members in 2012 and will have an entire program set up "to make it happen". The GET THE BUZZ FOR MEMBERSHIP program is sure to stir up a buzz around Antioch as part of the program is an approved $50.12 fee to join during 2012.

2012 Friday Night Bites

Next year we are adding a new twist to the Friday Night Bites. They will be themed to help make them each special and even more fun. So far we have planned for Friday Night Bites: Movie Night, Hockey Night, Baseball Night, Jimmie Buffett, Ice Cream Social, Fall Festival, Halloween Party, Chili Cook-off & End of World Party.

They will remain appetizer type social nights on the 3rd Friday of each month and starting off in January we will hold Movie Night. Friday Night Bites will start at the normal time but around 7:30 we will go upstairs for "The Bee Movie" which is an animated family movie starring the voices of Jerry Sienfeld, Renee Zellweger and Matthew Broderick (91 Minutes in length)

Antioch Elections

I would like to thank the Nobles for their confidence by electing me to serve as the 2012 Potentate for Antioch Shrine. I am lucky to have a very good slate of elected officers: John Bull Jr. Chief Rabban, Scott Lipps Assistant Rabban, Kevin Sweeney High Priest & Prophet, Dave Heizer Oriental Guide, Jerry Jamieson Recorder, and Rob Fickert Treasurer. Richard Poore is also being appointed as the Chaplain. Congratulations also goes out to Bill Garlow who is our retiring Potentate for 2011.
